Halloween Prep for Pups: How to Keep Your Dog Safe This Spooky Season
Halloween brings costumes, candy, decorations, and plenty of visitors to the front door. While all of that can be fun for people, the holiday can be overwhelming—and sometimes dangerous—for our pets.
A little preparation can go a long way toward keeping your dog safe and comfortable throughout the Halloween festivities. From keeping candy out of reach to creating a calm space away from trick-or-treaters, here are a few things pet owners should keep in mind this Halloween.
Keep Halloween Treats Away From Pets
The candy bowl may be one of the best parts of Halloween, but it should stay well out of your pet’s reach. Chocolate can be toxic to dogs, and some sugar-free candies and gums contain xylitol, which can also be extremely dangerous.
Candy wrappers can pose a risk, too. Curious dogs may swallow wrappers along with the treats, potentially causing choking or intestinal blockages.
Keep candy in a secure location your pet can’t access, and remind children and guests not to share their Halloween treats with four-legged family members. If you want your pup to join in on the fun, have a few dog-safe treats ready instead.
Prepare Reactive or Anxious Dogs for Visitors
For some dogs, Halloween night means hours of unfamiliar people approaching the house, ringing the doorbell, knocking, talking loudly, and wearing unusual costumes. That can be stressful even for dogs that are normally comfortable at home.
If your dog is reactive, anxious, or easily overstimulated, consider setting up a quiet space away from the front door before trick-or-treating begins. Give them their bed, favorite toys, water, and something engaging to keep them occupied.
It’s also important to make sure doors and gates stay secure throughout the evening. With the front door opening repeatedly, an anxious or excited dog may have more opportunities to slip outside.
And remember: your dog doesn’t need to greet every trick-or-treater. Giving them a safe place to relax may be the best way for them to spend Halloween night.
Watch Out for Halloween Décor Hazards
Pumpkins, candles, string lights, fake cobwebs, and spooky decorations can transform your home for Halloween, but some decorations may create unexpected hazards for pets.
Keep lit candles and jack-o’-lanterns somewhere your dog can’t knock them over or get too close to the flame. Electrical cords should be secured and kept away from pets that like to chew. Small decorations and pieces of décor should also be placed out of reach if they could become choking hazards.
Fake cobwebs, ribbons, and other string-like decorations deserve extra attention, as curious pets may try to chew or swallow them.
When decorating, take a quick look around from your pet’s perspective. If something looks tempting to chew, pull down, or investigate, it’s probably worth moving it somewhere safer.
A Safe Halloween Is a Happy Halloween
Halloween can be fun for the whole family, including your pets, as long as their comfort and safety are part of the plan. Keeping dangerous treats out of reach, preparing for visitors, and pet-proofing your decorations can help make the night a little less spooky for your pup.
At Heidi’s Hope for Homeless Animals, we believe keeping pets safe starts with helping owners feel prepared. And while you’re celebrating this Halloween, don’t forget about the shelter and rescue animals still waiting for a safe, loving home of their own.
